Three weeks of fun!

Our second home is in Old Greenwich/Stamford, USA. For three weeks we enjoyed wonderful people, lot's of music, sea food, hot sun, blue water, Ben&Jerry's ice cream, deck parties, family feeling, squirrels, home made Japanese cuisine, Woodstock/Bethel, roller coasters, blueberries, and mainly friends.

A little update

Wow, it's been a loooong time since I have posted last. Four months have passed . . . and we are doing great. In the meantime I have successfully completed the project in Neuhausen, slept three weeks with ro on our balkony -- due to perfectly star-clear summernights and exciting thunderstorms, have had a car accident with a deer :-(, moved out, and enjoyed three weeks in CT.
And at the moment I am in "Nowhere-Land". I am done with the "old" life, but have not arrived in the "new" life yet. A special situation, which gives you a lot of time to get ready for the jump. Yes, we are jumping again!

An adventures day

Have you ever been to a "High-Wire-Garden"??? Well, we have. My sister and I gave our dad for his Birthday a gift certificate for him and his family to experience this adventure.
I can only recommend that -- it was so much fun. You have to imagine being high up on a platform in a tree (of course you are saved to a rope). You look over to the other tree, and then . . . JUMP . . . just like Tarzan hanging on a rope. You climb from tree to tree and there are always different possibilities to get there. ro and I were totally in our elements as you can see.

Summer feelin'

We had a wonderful Easter -- For the last three weeks we have had temperatures between 70 and 75° Fahrenheit. The cleaned up balkony with it's little table, the first herbs and colourful hammock seems huge and inviting at these temperatures. Meanwhile the vegetation is all green, flowers are in colours, people are in their best moods, and the farm animals around us have babies.
I took a few days off to spend some time with the people I love. In the short time of a few days I have been very active -- we did horseback riding and biking in Brandenburg, canoeing in Spreewald, and rock climbing at the Elbsandsteingebirge.
. . . couldn't have gotten more out of this summer weather!

Balance

I think I found my balance to my mother- and social worker role. On the back of a horse in nature I can only be myself. That's just as important.

Ich glaube ich habe meinen Ausgleich zur täglichen Mutter- und Sozialarbeiter Rolle gefunden. Auf dem Rücken eines Pferdes kann ich einfach nur ich selbst sein. Das ist genau so wichtig.

Juggling Convention in Dresden, Germany

The gym was built into the ground. When we came in the main entrance, we found ourselfs already on the first floor. Straight ahead was a huge window from where you can look down into the hall. We came in and automatically saw this enourmious glas front, which gave us the first impression -- hundreds of juggling clubs, - balls, and - rings flying through the air. It looked amazing!
Last weekend nearly hundred jugglers got together in Dresden, which is known as one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Of course Ro&ro in the midst of it all !!!
ro walked on walking globes and on a rope. But most of the time she was busy with her new friend she found. I took advantage and tried to find new juggling tricks I could use and teach my students.

Die Halle war in den Boden hineingebaut. Als wir in durch den Haupteingang hinein kamen, satnden wir bereits im ersten Stock. Direkt vor uns erstreckte sich ein riesiges Fenster, durch welches man hinunter in die Halle blicken konnte. Wir traten also ein und sahen automatisch diese reisen grosse Glasfront vor uns, welche uns den ersten Eindruck verlieh -- Hunderte von Jonglierbällen, -keulen und -ringen flogen durch die Luft. Es sah einfach genial aus!
Letztes Wochenende trafen fast 100 Jongleure in Dresden, eine als der schönsten Städte Deutschlands bekannt, zusammen. Natürlich waren RO&ro mittendrin !!!
ro lief übers Seil und auf Laufkugeln. Aber den grössten Teil der Zeit verbrachte sie mit ihrem neuen Freund, den sie da kennen lernte. Die ganze Halle machten die Beiden unsicher. . .
Ich nutzte die Gelegenheit aus und versuchte neue Tricks zu ergattern, welche ich in meinem Projekt nutzen und den Teilnehmern beibringen könnte.

Tree house discovered/Baumhaus entdeckt

Sometimes when everything gets to be too much you need to get out in nature to breath some fresh air. And if you do so and start to relax, you begin to become open for new things that might come along. . .
On one of ROro's "fresh-air trips" two days ago we discovered a tree house, not very far from where we live. There is something adventurous about tree houses and we definitely found our playground in our little village.

Wenn einem alles anfängt über den Kopf zu wachsen, sollte man manchmal in die Natur verschwinden, um etwas Frischluft zu atmen. Und wenn man dies tut, fängt man an wieder empfänglicher für neue Dinge zu werden , die eventuell deinen Weg kreuzen könnten. . .
Auf einem von "ROro's-Frischluft Ausflug" haben wir ein Baumhaus entdeckt. Dieses ist sogar ganz in der Nähe unseres Hauses. Baumhäuser haben so etwas abenteuerliches und laden zum klettern und träumen ein. Ich bin mir jedenfalls sicher, dass wir unseren Spielplatz hier in unserem Dorf nun gefunden haben.

Es war ein sonniger, warmer Tag im September 2008, als ich zum ersten Mal vor dem Schloss und dem dazugehörigen Zirkuszelt stand. Nur 6 Wochen später sollte ich es als Arbeitsstelle betreten. Mit dem heutigen Tag bin ich schon seit 3 Monaten dabei.
Mein Job ist es ein Projekt zur beruflichen Orientierung von Jugendlichen zu leiten. Das pädagogische Mittel ist die Zirkuspädagogik. Das Projekt ist auf 10 Monate angelegt und beschäftigt 12 Jugendliche im Alter von 18-24 Jahren. Gearbeitet wird in 4 Modulen: Zirkustraining, Werkstatt, betriebliches Praktikum und individuelle Qualifizierung.
1. Beim Zirkustraining haben Teamarbeit und Motivation oberste Priorität.
Zielorientiertes Arbeiten und der gemeinsame Erfolg bei der Präsentation fördern
Selbstbewusstsein und Zielstrebigkeit, elementare Fähigkeiten für den Berufseinstieg.
2. Im Werkstattprojekt erwerben sie, z. B. beim Bühnenbau, in Licht und
Tontechnik oder in der Kostümschneiderei handwerklich-technisches Wissen.
3. In einem betrieblichen Praktikum sammeln die Teilnehmer Erfahrungen in der realen
Arbeitswelt und erlernen verschiedene Bearbeitungsverfahren.
4. Individuelle Förderung/Beratung: Den Jugendlichen werden Grundkenntnisse in Deutsch, Mathematik, Arbeitsrecht und EDV vermittelt. Ausserdem bekommen sie eine individuelle Berufsberatung.

So lautet die Beschreibung des Projektes. Mit anderen Worten, dies ist was von mir als Projektleiterin erfüllt werden muss. An meiner Seite habe ich einen Tischler und einmal pro Woche einen staatlich anerkannten Artisten. Wir arbeiten zusammen mit dem Job Center, welcher uns die Jugendlichen vermittelt.

Für mich ist es ein harter Einstieg ins Berufsleben, aber ich liebe die Herausforderung und daran zu wachsen. Und da das Projekt gut läuft, gehe ich davon aus, dass ich der Aufgabe gewachsen bin.

It was a warm and sunny day in September 2008 when I first saw the castle and the circus tent that belongs to it. Only 6 weeks later I happened to have my first working day there. Today it has been 3 months already.
My job is to manage a project of professional orientation for youngsters. The pedagogical method is social circus/circus pedagogy. The project is running for 10 months and occupies 12 young adults in the age of 18-24 years. We work in 4 modules: circus training, industrial education, internship, and individual support/counselling.

1. In the circus training we consider teamwork and motivation as our biggest priorities. Goal oriented working and shared success during shows develop self esteem and a strength of purpose.
2. During industrial training the participants gain practical and technical knowledge while doing light engineering and set building.
3. An internship gives the idea of a real working environment.
4. Individual support/counselling means individual career counselling and teaching basics in math, German, computing, etc.

That is what the description of the project says. In other words: This is what is expected from me as the manager. In my team I have a carpenter and once in a week an artist. We cooperate together with the job center which provides us with the participants.

For me this is a huge step into the business world. But I love the challenge because this gives me the chance to really grow. And since the project is running well, I get the feeling that I am big enough for this challenge.

Since a new year has just started and I slowly get settled in my new life, I start thinking about the year 2008. . .
2008 was probably the toughest year for me in the 27+ years I have been living in this world. It is a gift to not know on January 1st, what the next 364 days will have in store for you.
Nevertheless, my year started great and ended great. What has happened in between is a different story. . .
Now I have reached 2009 and I can say I am happy again. I want to thank all the people who helped me getting there. I appreciate your advice, your criticism, your compliments, and every helpful hand. Thank you.

Da das neue Jahr nun begonnen hat und ich mich in meinem neuen Leben so langsam eingewöhne, beginne ich über das letzte Jahr nachzudenken. . .
Das Jahr 2008 war wahrscheinlich das schwierigste Jahr in meinen 27 Jahren, die ich nun schon in dieser Welt verbringe. Man kann von Glück reden, dass man am 1. Januar noch nicht weis, was die nächsten 364 Tage mit sich bringen werden.
Nichtsdestotrotz begann mein Jahr positiv und endete genial! Alles was dazwischen passierte ist eine andere Story. . .
Mittlerweile habe ich 2009 erreicht und kann endlich sagen, dass ich wieder glücklich bin! Ich möchte mich gern bei allen, die mich auf diesem Weg unterstützt haben, bedanken. Eure Ratschläge, Kritiken, Lobe, die helfenden Hände und euer Verständnis in manch unangenehmen Situation weis ich sehr zu schätzen. Vielen Dank.

Unfortunately I cannot avoid being a car owner. My job is 15 km away from my house. An apartment closer to where I work was impossible to find. Not even my bike could help me. Therefor I am now driving a car around. I already experienced the major expense of registration and insurrance. But I also feel more independent as a benefit of the car. Anyway -- RO and ro are having a car now.

Wintereinbruch/ Onset of Winter

It started to snow on Friday. It is weird what snow can do. I stepped out into the day light after my training in the circus tent and everything was covered in white. There is such silence out there . . . almost like the snow is swallowing all noise. Especially here in the country side. The world seems peaceful but unfortunately really isn't. Anyway ro and I had a lot of fun yesterday in the snow making snow angels, having a snowball fight and taking a ride (well ro took a ride, I had to pull. . . ) on our slide through the snowy forest. Would be cool if Christmas is covered in snow as well. We'll see. . .

Viele Dinge mussten wir aufgeben für das Land, wie zum Beispiel das musizieren in der Musikschule. Dafür haben wir hier andere Möglichkeiten, unter anderem auf dem Rücken eines Pferdes sitzen zu können. Wenn alles gut klappt, kauf ich ro und mir ein Pferd und wir reiten zum Kindergarten und zur Arbeit. Bei den Benzinpreisen von heute . . . macht das durchaus Sinn.

With our move into the country we had to give up many things, for example playing music at the music school. Therefore do we have other cool options to spend our free time with. One is to go horse riding. If everything turns out well, I am going to buy a horse for ro and me. That way we can take the horse to day care instead of the car. This makes even sense considering the high gasoline prices of today.

Moved/ Umgezogen

Für die, die es noch nicht wissen: Wir haben die Großstadt verlassen. . . und sind aufs Land gezogen in Brandenburg.
Den Arbeitsvertrag, den ich mit der USA hatte, musste ich noch bevor ich die Arbeit antreten konnte, aus verschiedenen Gründen kündigen. Obwohl ich Jahre auf dieses Ziel hingearbeitet habe, hatte ich keine Zeit diesem geplatzen Traum nachzutrauern. . . denn ein neues Jobangebot ließ nicht lange auf sich warten. Allerdings ist dieser Job nicht in Berlin, sondern mitten zwischen Bauernhöfen in Brandenburg. Die Entscheidung musste schnell fallen und ich entschied mich dem Angebot zu folgen, dafür Berlin zu verlassen und auf's Land zu ziehen.
Die Umstellung ist groß. Auf Dinge, die in der Großstadt als selbstverständlich erschienen (bunte Menschen, Kultur, öffentl. Verkehrsmittel, Läden um die Ecke, usw.) muss plötzlich verzichtet werden. Dafür haben wir auch einige Dinge hinzugewonnen (Natur, Ruhe, Platz, Hundekackefreie Wege).
Für Klein ro allerdings ist diese neue Welt eine Bereicherung. In ihrer kleinen Naturkita mit nur 12 Kindern und 5 Schafen nebenan hat sie sich sofort wohlgefühlt. Mit einer neuen Freundin im Dorf entdeckt sie nun das Leben auf dem Lande.
Ich glaube, mir tut die Ruhe nach 5 Jahren Großstadt auch gut, nur fühl ich mich noch nicht so. Aber ich bin geduldig . . .

For those who don't know it yet: We left the big city. . . and moved to Brandenburg in the country. I had to quit the contract of employment I had with a company in the US, even before I had the chance to start the job. But this is another story . . .
Even though I worked on that goal over the past years, there was no time for being sad about this sudden change. Because immediately another job found his way to me. However, this job is not in Berlin, but in between farms in Brandenburg. The decision had to be made quick. I decided to take on the new challenge, to leave Berlin and to go rural.
The adjustment is huge. Things that you start to take as granted in a big town like Berlin (colorful people, culture, publ. Transportation, stores around the corner, etc.) you have to now abstain from. But therefore we won new things (nature, calmness, space, dog pup free roads).
For little ro is this new world an enrichment. Immidiately she felt comfortable in her new small nature-day care with only 12 kids and 5 sheep in the neighbor property. And with her new friend in our cottage she is now discovering the world in the countryside.
I believe that this peace here is doing good for me too, after 5 years of living in Berlin. Unfortunately I am still waiting to feel this way. But I am patient . . .

Connecticut is part of the New England States. It is been known for the beautiful colours that come out in the fall. We went for a walk last weekend and enjoyed a calm fall day.

Since things are getting a bit difficult and stressful, we are using a three week gap to get out of our German life. We do have the possibility now and then to hop into another life over in the USA -- to get gas and to take a deep breath. At this point I want to thank all my friends in CT, who provide us since 7!!! years with such wonderful hospitality. We so appreciate this, because without them we wouldn't have had this "escape-life".

Seit die Umstände in Deutschland immer mehr die Form von Stress annehmen und enormen Druck aufbauen, haben wir unser drei-Wochen-Loch genutzt Deutschland den Rücken zu kehren. Wir haben ab und zu die Möglichkeit in ein anderes Leben in den USA zu schlüpfen -- um auftanken und mal wieder richtig durchatmen zu können. An dieser Stelle möchten wir uns bei all unseren Freunden in CT, die uns immerwieder seit 7!!! Jahren mit warmer Gastfreundschaft empfangen, bedanken. Wir schätzen das sehr, denn ohne sie hätten wir nicht dieses gesunde "Ausweich-Leben".

Walking Globe/Laufkugel

I remember when I started juggling. I was about 16 years old. I was crazy about learning it. So I took every opportunity to juggle -- mostly with my rolled-up socks until I got my first juggling balls.
Now, after four years of being on earth the Magic of Circus has caught Little ro! I took her several times to my circus workshops so she had the chance to get to know RO's circus world. The walking globes have caught her attention most and within days she learned how to walk on them. Now every time we see a globe she has to take the opportunity to keep practising her new circus element. That reminds me of how it started with me. I am just wondering when I have to buy the first walking globe. So in a way I hope she switches to juggling. . .

Chopping wood!!!!
Since Sarah is coming back to Berlin in December to live in her trailer, she needs wood for heating. So we spent the whole day chopping wood. Man, do I feel better now! ;-)

The end of the summer?

Last week we had typically beautiful summer weather. We enjoyed the warm sunrays at the water playground around the corner. This week, though, already seems like fall. It is chilly, rainy, and it even has the characteristic autumn smell in the air. I know that with the end of the summer there will also come big changes for us. The fall will have some major surprises in store. I am not sure if I am ready for them yet.

Letzte Woche hatten wir typisch, wunderschönes Sommerwetter. Wir haben die Tage auf dem Wasserspielplatz ganz in der Nähe genossen. Diese Woche allerdings scheint es schon Herbst zu sein. Es ist kühl, regnerisch und es gibt sogar schon den charakteristischen Herbst Geruch in der Luft. Mir ist bewußt, dass mit dem Ende des Sommers uns auch große Veränderungen bevorstehen. Der Herbst wird einige Überraschungen bereit haben. Ich bin mir aber nicht sicher, ob ich schon bereit dafür bin.

Trapez/Trapeze

Zur Zeit haben wir Besuch von unserer Zirkusfreundin Sarah. Zusammen mit ihr haben wir heute ihre Freunde beim trainieren in der Trapezhalle besucht. Klein-ro konnte natürlich nicht anders als dieses faszinierende Gerät auszuprobieren. Ein Trapez erfordert viel Konzentration, Kraft und vor allem Schwindelfreiheit. Klein-ro hat sich wacker geschlagen und freut sich schon auf Samstag. Denn da werden wir in das Wintergarten Varieté gehen, um die professionellen Trapezkünstler zu bestaunen und neue Tricks abzugucken. ;o)

Our circus friend Sarah is here to visit us for a few days. Together with her we visited two friends of hers, who practiced in the trapeze gym. Little-ro couldn't hesitate to check out this faszinating apparatus. A trapeze needs concentration and strength. And, you have to be especially careful not to get dizzy. Little-ro was very brave on the trapeze and is now looking forward to Saturday. We will go to the Wintergarten Varieté to watch the professional aerial acrobats and to copy some new tricks. ;o)

In Action

Last weekend my friend invited me to go on a trip in a motor boat. I didn't know that Berlin has so many water canals. There are three rivers flowing through Berlin and about 300 lakes in and around Berlin. All these are connected by water canals. There is an area only 18 minutes by subway away from my apartment that is an especially beautiful area. The people call it "Little Venice". That's where we took our trip in a motor boat. I think it is wonderful that a city like Berlin (3,4 Million citizens) has nature spots like this. And I already know what I will surprise my parents with when they come to visit me next week.

Letztes Wochenende wurde ich zu einer Motorboot Fahrt von meiner Freundin eingeladen. Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass Berlin aus so vielen Kanälen besteht. Es gibt drei Flüsse, die durch Berlin fließen und ca. 300 Seen in und um Berlin. Alles ist verbunden mit Kanälen. Nur 18 Minuten mit der S-Bahn entfernt von meiner Wohnung gibt es eine besonders schöne Gegend. Die Leute hier nennen sie "Klein Venedig". Diesen Ort haben wir per Motorboot erkundet. Ich finde es sehr angenehm, dass eine Stadt wie Berlin (3,4 Mio Einwohner) Naturgebiete wie dieses hat. Und jetzt weis ich auch schon mit was ich meine Eltern, die nächste Woche zu Besuch kommen, überraschen werde.

Kindertag/Childrens Day

Gestern war bei uns in Deutschland der Kindertag. Es war ein heißer Sommertag und gemeinsam mit meinen Eltern und drei Freunden von ro haben wir den Tag mit Spiel und Spass im Park verbracht.
ro hat auch endlich ihre lange ersehnten Inline Skates bekommen. Von nun an heißt es mit Mami Inline Skates fahren üben.

Yesterday was Childrens Day in Germany. It was a hot summer day. And we celebrated the day together with my parents and three friends of ro in the park, where we had a lot of fun.
ro got her Inline Skates that she had wished for for a long time. From now on our afternoons will be busy with practising how to inline skate.

Social Circus

IMAGINE

. . . a place where people are happy.
. . . where you can live your dream.
. . . where there is action in the air.
. . . where the world still works with people sharing and being fair to each other.
. . . a world that is not black or white, but colorful.
. . . that's where I was the past week!!!!

I teach a circus class every friday for two hours. And with these kids I went to southwest Germany to participate at a social circus festival. It was a big event -- 300 kids and 50 circus trainers worked one whole week on a show.

I don't get paid with money for what I was doing there the past week. But when the kids stand in the middle of the stage surrounded by the colorful lights of the circus and when suddenly the spot light shines down on them a dream comes true -- they look at me and there is this special spark and endless pride in their eyes -- that is my payment!!!
If I can somehow pull this thing off and survive financially with a circus for and with kids
. . . that's how I want to get paid for the rest of my life. That means fulfillment for me.

Memories/Erinnerungen

I took this picture last week only five walk minutes down the street from my parents' house. I am in love with this "peace" of land. This is more than just a photo for me. That's where I walked together with my grandpa as a little girl while he made me sensitive to all the noises of nature. One night when I was about ten years old -- wearing my pajamas and a sweater on top because it was getting cool at night -- he took me to this place where we were very quiet so we could listen to the nightingales sing.
It also reminds me of the foggy mornings when I took my bike to school and passed that tree, my favorite tree, every day. Even back then I thought I should catch that image in a photo one day to keep me reminded of what was important to me 15+ years ago, what affected and will always be part of me.
What you see on the photo is what my child eyes saw. I was always amazed by this land. This photo I took for myself -- a gift to me.

Imagine . . ./Stell dir vor. . .

What is it that little people think of? What would I give to look inside her head sometimes. I get the feeling that these young human beings create their own reality to live in. It seems like they are able to ignore stress and to filter the positive and express it in laughter and smile. But at the same time their little beautiful reality can break very easily. We have to take care of them!
I took this shot two days ago at a family event in Riesa. I spent the weekend there with my parents. It was great!

Was ist es, an was kleine Leute denken? Was würde ich darum geben in ihren Kopf hinein sehen zu können? Ich habe das Gefühl, diese jungen Menschen kreieren ihre eigene Realität in der sie leben. Sie scheinen in der Lage zu sein Stress zu ignorieren und das Positive zu filtern, was sie dann in einem Lächeln und Lachen an uns wiedergeben. Doch kann diese schöne Realität auch einfach zerbrechen. Es ist in unserer Pflicht sie zu beschützen!
Ich habe dieses Foto vor zwei Tagen bei einem Familien Fest in Riesa geschossen. Ich habe das Wochenende dort zusammen mit meinen Eltern verbracht. Es war toll!

Spielplatz Baum/ playground tree

Ich fand heute klein ro im Baum spielend in 2,50m Höhe. Sie hatte damit ihren ruhigen Platz in der hektischen Großstadt Berlin gefunden.

Currently I am in the U.S.A. (Greenwich, CT). I am taking Interviews to look into my options if I can find a market for circus pedagogy here. I am graduating in July this year and therefore try now to find a perfect spot for realising a social circus project. Maybe it's in Germany, maybe it's in the US?

Zurzeit bin ich in den Vereinigten Staaten (Greenwich, CT). Ich habe Interviews mit verschiedenen Institutionen. Ich möchte sehen, ob es einen Markt für Zirkuspädagogik hier gibt. Ich werde mein Studium im Juli diesen Jahres abschließen und versuche deshalb nun den perfekten Ort für ein Zirkuspädagogik-Projekt zu finden. Vielleicht ist es in Deutschland, vielleicht aber auch in den USA?

ROro-juice/ROro-Saft

Frisch gepresster Saft ist in unserem kleinen Haushalt die wertvollste Nahrung. Wir haben dafür eine Saftpresse und genießen seit knapp einem Jahr jeden Morgen zum Frühstück unseren selbst gepressten Saft. Ich weis, dass die Maschiene groß aussieht und auch nicht so elegant. Aber glaubt mir, diese Anschaffung war eine der sinnvollsten Investitionen für mich.
Ich glaube daran, dass dieses kleine Ritual auf Langzeit unser Immunsystem stärkt und auch die Haut weich und gesund macht. Was ihr auf diesen Fotos seht, ist der Saft von diesem Morgen. Wir haben zwei Orangen, einen Apfel, zwei Karotten und eine kleine Rote Bete zu Saft verarbeitet. Es ist lecker und überhaupt nicht vergleichbar mit dem Saft, den man im Supermarkt kaufen kann. Da ich kein großer Obstesser bin, ist dies eine coole Möglichkeit Vitamin C trotzdem täglich zu bekommen.

Freshly pressed juice is in our little household the most valuable nutrition. We have a mashine that can do that and since almost a year now we drink our self made juice for breakfast every day. I know this mashine looks huge and not so stylish, but trust me this one was one of the best investments I've ever made.
I believe that this little ritual over the long run makes our immune system strong and our skin smooth. What you see on the foto is the juice we had this morning. We pressed two oranges, one apple, two carrots, and a small beetroot. It's delicious and not comparable with bought juice from the grocery store. Since I am not a big fruit eater, is this a cool possibility to still get the needed amount of vitamin C every day.

Ich bin wirklich davon ausgegangen, dass es keinen Winter dieses Jahr geben wird in Berlin. Doch tatsächlich bekamen wir heute zum ersten Mal seit Anfang November Schnee zu Gesicht.
Am gleichen Tag begann der Streik auf die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel in Berlin. Jederman (und -frau) sprang auf das Auto um, sofern eins zur Verfügung stand. Das Chaos war perfect: Schneetreiben und keine öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel.
Der Streik wird vorerst 10 Tage andauern.

I really thought Berlin wouldn't get a winter this year. But essentially it snowed today for the first time since the beginning of November.
Today also started the strike of the Berlin public transportation. Everybody who had a car had to take it.
The mess was perfect: Snow flurry and no public transportation.

Heute war der erste Tag an dem man den Frühling riechen konnte. Wir hatten den ganzen Tag Sonne und ca. 15 Grad Celsius. Sofort kommen die Leute aus ihren Häusern und die Strassen werden wieder bunt. Die Wettervorhersage meint es bleibt mild in den nächsten Tagen. Das ist toll aber sehr unnatürlich für Februar.

Today was the first day where you were able to smell spring. We had sun all day long and a temperature of about 59 degrees Fahrenheit. Immediately people come out of their houses and streets become colorful again. The weather forecast says that it'll stay mild for the next days. That's great but unusual for February.

Wir hatten mit dem Seminar einen drei-tägigen Steinworkshop. Es war nicht einfach mit so einfachem Werkzeug, wie Hammer und Meißel den Stein zu bearbeiten. Ich habe einen Wal gemeißelt, weil ich mich diesen Tieren sehr verbunden fühle. Und ich bin zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis. Den Rest der Woche werde ich wohl damit verbringen , meine Hände zu pflegen. ;o)

With the seminar we had a three-day stone workshop. It was'n easy at all working with simple tools like hammer and chisel. I created a whale because I feel somehow connected with these amazing animals. And I am happy with the result that came out. Now, for the rest of the week I might take care of my hands. ;o)

Julay

Unser jüngster Mitbewohner ist Julay. Er ist Anfang Dezember bei uns eingezogen. Sein Frauchen musste in eine kleinere Wohnung umziehen. Da Julay zusammen mit zwei anderen Katzen gewohnt hatte, die ihn ständig unterdrückt haben, wäre es in der kleineren Wohnung noch unerträglicher geworden für ihn.
Sein Frauchen hat sich deshalb entschieden, Julay zu uns zugeben. Nun wohnt er bei uns und hat sich auch schon gut eingelebt. Er ist immer noch sehr ängstlich und braucht seine Zeit um Vertrauen auf zu bauen. Doch Stück für Stück taut er auf und belohnt uns mit seinem Schnurren.

Our youngest roommate is Julay. He moved in in the beginning of December. The cat's owner had to move into a smaller apartment. And since Julay has lived together with two other cats, who constantly bothered him the smaller apartment wouldn't have been too good.
His owner made therefore the decision to give the cat away. Now he lives with us und seems to feel comfortable. He still is kind of fearful though and needs his time to find confidence. But little by little he warms up and gives us his purr.

Ich wollte Euch mal meine beste Freundin vorstellen. Sie wohnt im gleichen Haus und wir verbringen viel Zeit miteinander, welche wir gern mit Unsinn und Streichen bestücken. hihi -- zu Freuden unserer Eltern. Erst letzte Woche haben wir alle Türen vom Weihnachtskalender aufgemacht und ein anderes Mal haben wir die Stempelfarbe gefunden und unsere Hände als Stempel benutzt. Das hat Spass gemacht. Wir haben immer neue Ideen. Ich kann unser nächstes Treffen kaum abwarten.

Just last week we opened all the doors in our advents calender. Another time we found the ink pad and dipped our whole hands in it to decorate the paper and everything we had our hands on. ro hat mich heute in der FH besucht. Was für ein Abenteuer (für uns Beide um ehrlich zu sein) -- die Dozentin hat ihr sogar erlaubt an der Tafel zu schreiben. Jetzt kann sie es kaum erwarten, bis sie endlich zum Studium darf. Letztens hat sie mir erzählt, dass sie Ärztin werden möchte. Mal sehen, was in 15 Jahren davon noch übrig ist. ;o)

ro visited me at my university today. What an adventure that was (for both of us to be honest) -- the teacher even allowed her to write on the black board. Now she can't wait until she can start studying. A few days ago she has told me that she would like to become a doctor when she is big. We'll see what is left from that thought 15 years from now. ;o)

Immer wenn wir an einem Trampolin vorbeikommen, fragt sie mich Löcher in den Bauch bis sie drauf kann. Ich liebe es, sie so glücklich zu sehen. Und ich muss ehrlich zugeben, dass wenn ich mich als "Erwachsener" nicht so komisch gefühlt hätte, wäre ich mit gesprungen.

Das ist mein erster Fotoapparat. Ich habe ihn von Papa. Jetzt kann ich Fotos machen, genau wie Mama. Der einzige Unterschied -- Ich betrachte die Welt anders. Mit meinen Kinderaugen kann ich Dinge sehen, denen die Erwachsenen keine Aufmerksamkeit schenken. Deswegen denke ich, dass meine Fotos was ganz Besonderes sind. :o)

This is my first camera. Dad gave it to me. Now I can take pictures just like mommy. The only difference -- I look at the world differently. With my children eyes I see things that gown-ups don't pay attention to. So I think my photos are kind of special. :o)

Ich schwitze gerade über meiner Diplomarbeit. Es ist mein derzeitiger Volltagsjob! Aber es ist auch ein tolles Gefühl die Arbeit zu schreiben, denn ich sehe nun das Ende meines Studiums.
Erster Abgabetermin ist der 25.09.07. Zum Glück habe ich die Möglichkeit als alleinerziehende Mutter zu verlängern.

European Summer School 2007

Die European Summer School findet jedes Jahr in der zweiten Julihälfte an der Alice Salomon FH in Berlin statt. Für zwei Wochen kommen Studenten der Sozialarbeit aus ganz Europa zusammen und nehmen an dem Programm, welches immer unter einem bestimmten Europäischen Thema steht, teil.
Mit zwei der Teilnehmer habe ich die letzten zwei Wochen meine Wohnung geteilt. Das eine Mädchen kommt aus Albanien und das andere aus Holland.
Die zwei Wochen hätte ich nicht schöner und produktiver verbringen können. Die englische Sprache war der Schlüssel zu anderen Kulturen. Wir haben beim Frühstück die sozialen Probleme von Holland, Deutschland und Albanien verglichen, am Abend über die Erlebnisse des Tages gelacht, am Wochenende international gekocht, zwischendurch Berlin bestaunt und sind bei alldem gute Freunde geworden, die sich gegenseitig sehr schätzen. Nebenbei habe ich mich durch ihre Zielstrebigkeit motivieren können an meiner Diplomarbeit zu arbeiten.
Heute morgen sind sie wieder in ihre Heimat zurück gereist.
Ich wünsche ihnen alles Gute für die Zukunft und hoffe sie kommen ihren Zielen näher.

The European Summer School takes place at the Alice Salomon FH in Berlin, in the second half of July each year. For a period of two weeks, social work students from all over Europe take part at the program which is always held under a current European theme.
With two of the participants I shared my apartment for the last two weeks. One girl came from The Netherlands and the other girl came from Albania. I couldn't have spent this time in a better and more productive way. The English Language was the key to the other cultures. At breakfast we compared social work of The Netherlands, Albania and Germany, at dinner we laughed about our day adventures, cooked international food on the weekend, discovered Berlin in between, and became through all that good friends who appreciate each other a lot. Additionally, I became motivated to work on my thesis while they were busy with their studies.
This morning they left to travel back home.
I wish them good luck for their future and hope that they will get closer to their set goals.

Wer hat nicht von ihm gehört? Knut der junge Berliner Eisbär wurde am 05.Dezember 2006 im Berliner Zoo geboren und von seiner Mutter (die früher im Staatszirkus der DDR gehalten wurde) verstoßen. Er wurde von menschenhand großgezogen und ist seitdem Attraktion im Berliner Zoo. Er ist der erste Eisbär der im Berliner Zoo geboren wurde und überlebt hat seit mehr als 30 Jahren. "Der Aktienkurs des seit 1841 börsennotierten Zoos stieg in Folge der Popularität Knuts von Mitte März bis Anfang April 2007 kurzfristig auf nahezu das Doppelte. Der Berliner Zoo rechnete unsprünglich für das Jahr 2007 mit Mehreinnahmen von 5 Mio. Euro, etwa die Hälfte davon durch die zusätzlich erwarteten 500.000 Besucher. Am 5. Naja......ich war gestern einer davon.

Who hasn't heard about him? Knut, the young Berlin polar bear, was born on December 05, 2006 in the Zoo of Berlin. He was rejected by his mother (who is a former circus performer) shortly after his birth and since then raised by humans. Now he is a great attraction at the zoo. He was the first polar bear to have been born and to have survived in the Berlin Zoo for over 30 years. The stock price of the zoo rose by 200% from the middle of March to the beginning of April. The Berlin Zoo expected 5 Million Euros of additional receipts for the year 2007, partly because of the additional 500,000 visitors who came just to see Knut. On July 5, 2007 the zoo already counted the millionth visitor for Knut.
Well.....I was one of them, yesterday.

Endlich......wir haben Sommer auf unserem Balkon! Ich habe zehn verschiedene Kräuter , eine Monats-Erdbeere, Lavendel und Moon gepflanzt. Letztes Wochenende haben meine Eltern mir noch einen Tisch mit zwei Stühlen geschenkt, so dass RO&ro jetzt jeden Abend auf dem Balkon zwischen den Baumkronen von Berlin Abendbrot essen können. Wir genießen und genießen.

Finally......we have summer on our balcony! I have planted ten different herbs, one strawberry, lavender and corn poppy. And last weekend my parents gave me a table with two chairs so that RO&ro can now eat dinner every evening on our balcony between the treetops of Berlin. We enjoy and enjoy.

Die letzten 5 Tage habe ich in Schweden verbracht. Meine Freundin studiert zwei Semester an der Växjö Universität. Es tut sehr gut einen guten Freund zu haben, bei dem man die Seele baumeln lassen kann. Anscheinend war es zu erholend für mich, denn der Erholungseffect setzte schnell ein und ich lag mit Fieber im Bett. Gestärkt und wieder fit bin ich am Dienstag in meinem Leben in Berlin wieder angekommen.

I have spent the last 5 days in Sweden. My friend is currently studying two semesters at Växjö University. It feels so good to have a good friend, where I can relax. I might have relaxed too much, because two days after I have arrived the "rest effect" settled in and I was in bed with a fever. And on Tuesday I arrived again strong and with new energy in my life in Berlin.

Spontaner Ausflug nach Prag / Spontaneous trip to Prague

Während klein ro ihr Wochenende bei Papa verbrachte, nahm groß RO den Zug um ihre Eltern zu besuchen. Es war ein tolles Wochenende, denn wir entschieden sehr spontan nach Prag zu fahren. Prag ist 240 km von der Stadt, in der meine Eltern leben, entfernt. Wir kamen 16.00 Uhr in Prag an und verließen die Stadt um 22.30 Uhr. Das war ziemlich verrückt aber einmalig. Und die Krönung war, dass wir ungefähr 29 Grad Celsius im Schatten hatten. Ein paar Eindrücke von unserem Ausflug nach Prag zeigen die oberen Fotos.

Prague is 149 miles away from the town where my parents live. We arrived in Prague by car at 4p and left the city at 10.30p. It was pretty crazy but unique. And on top of it we had about 84 degrees Fahrenheit . A few impressions of the trip to Prague show the pictures above.

Ein neues Familienmitglied/ A new family member

Der Hase von meinen Großeltern hat Junge bekommen und einen davon habe ich Ronja zu Ostern geschenkt. Es ist ein Weibchen und wir haben sie "Alba" genannt (es ist lateinisch und bedeutet "weiß"). Sie wohnt mit ihrem Hasenstall an einem hellen Platz auf unserem Balkon. Klein ro ist glücklich und die große RO hat was zum schmusen. :o)

My grandparents bunny got babys and one of them I gave Ronja for Easter. The bunny is a girl and we named her "Alba" (it is latin and means "white"). She lives with her hutch at a sunny place on our balcony. Little ro is happy and big RO has something to snuggle with. :o)

Seit Dienstag nun heißt es sowohl für die kleine ro als auch für die große RO wieder zeitig aufstehen, Ziele stecken und ehrgeizig daran arbeiten.
Ronja geht wieder in den Kindergarten und ich widme mich weiter fleißig meinem Studium.

Since Tuesday it means again for little ro as well as for big RO getting up early, set goals, and to work on them ambitiously.
Ronja is going to day care again and I am working hard on my studies again.

Osterfeuer/ Easter Fire

Heute haben wir uns eines der vielen Osterfeuer angeschaut, welche jährlich um die Osterzeit stattfinden. Gigantisch sieht es schon aus so ein Osterfeuer. Das Osterfeuer ist ein Brauch, der schon sehr lange besteht und früher dazu diente den Schnee und damit die Winterzeit verschwinden zu lassen. Man glaubte damals auch, dass mit dem Feuer die Fruchtbarkeit für das Jahr gesichert sei und damit für eine gute Ernte sorgen würde.

Today we watched one of the many Easter Fires that take place every year around easter. Such an easter fire looks humongous. The easter fire is a rite that exists since a very long time. It was supposed to exorcize the snow and with it the winter time. One believed that through the fire the fertility was saved to yield a large crop.

Ronja's erster Zahnarztbesuch / Ronja's first dentist appointment

Geschafft!!! Alles super gesunde Zähne und keine Zahnteufel hat die Zahnärztin gesagt.

Made it!!! All super healthy teeth and zero tooth devils said the dentist.

Fleißiges Bienchen / Busy bee

Heute hatte ich große Hilfe beim Abwaschen. Aber was so idyllisch aussieht, stellte sich als puren Stress für die Mama heraus. Denn während klein ro abwäscht hat groß RO zu tun das ganze Wasser aufzuwischen, was links und rechts der Spüle runter läuft. Aber fleißig durchgehalten hat Ronja bis zum letzten Teller.

Today I had big help with doing the dishes. Even though it looks so idyllic it was stressful for mommy. Because while little ro does the dishes big RO is busy wiping off all the water that is running down the sink. But Ronja was helpful until the very last plate.
